What to Expect on the Mostraumen Fjord Cruise — Deck, Lounge, Food, Wet or Not

Nine thousand-odd reviews of the original Mostraumen cruise say roughly the same thing: beautiful, well run, cold on deck, bring a jacket, no stops. Here is the practical version of what the three and a half hours are like, so nothing surprises you.

The boat most people describe is the original Rødne catamaran.

The boat

A modern catamaran with a panoramic indoor lounge (big windows, tables), upper sun decks open to the air, toilets and changing tables, and a licensed snack bar — pastries and cinnamon buns from a Bergen bakery, waffles, sandwiches, hot and cold drinks, all paid for on board. The local operator’s boats are smaller (under 99 passengers) and simpler; the live-guided sailing has a saloon and two decks.

Where to sit

Inside for the harbour and the long Osterfjord stretch if the weather is poor; outside, at the bow, for the strait and the waterfall — that is the fifteen minutes the trip is for. Then inside for the return with a coffee. Seats are unassigned; the 10:00 boats in July–August fill, so board early if the deck matters to you.

What to wear

Layers and a windproof jacket even in July — a catamaran at speed makes its own weather — plus rain gear, because Bergen. Sun cream on a clear day; the deck is bright water-reflected light. In winter, hat and gloves for the deck.

Do you get wet?

Only if you want to. At the waterfall the captain brings the bow close enough that spray reaches the front of the deck; stand there and you get a face-full, stand back and you do not. Everything indoors stays dry.

Wildlife and photographs

Sea eagles are possible along the Osterfjord — the audio guide points them out — and the light on the water is the real subject. The strait and the waterfall are the two shots everyone takes; the return leg has the same walls with the light behind you.

The thing first-timers get wrong

There is no shore stop. You do not walk in a village, you do not get off at Mostraumen; the boat turns and comes back. That is the honest reason a fjord fits into 3.5 hours from a city quay — see the route — and if landing somewhere is what you want, it is the Nærøyfjord and Flåm day instead.

Departure: Zachariasbryggen (Torget 2) by the Fish Market for the original and the guided sailing; Strandkaien 13 for the local operator. Be there 15 minutes early.
Duration: 3–3.5 hours; the 10:00 boat is back around 13:30.
Children: child fares from age 4 (Rødne, NOK 470) or 2 (local operator, NOK 420); under-4s / infants free; a good length for kids.
Accessibility: ask the operator about boarding — the catamaran has indoor seating on the main deck; the sun decks are by stairs.
