Mostraumen vs the Nærøyfjord and Flåm: Which Fjord Trip From Bergen
Mostraumen is 3.5 hours from a city quay for under $100; the Nærøyfjord and Flåm Railway is a ten-hour, UNESCO-fjord day at three to four times the price. Which to book, when to do both, and how the Hardangerfjord and the RIB fit.
It is the question every Bergen visitor asks and most pages dodge: is Mostraumen “the fjord”, or should you spend the day and the money on the Nærøyfjord and Flåm? Honest answer: they are different products for different days, and here is how to choose.
Half a day: Mostraumen, from about $78. A whole day and a bigger budget: the Nærøyfjord and Flåm, below.
The two, side by side
| Mostraumen fjord cruise | Nærøyfjord + Flåm Railway day | |
|---|---|---|
| Time | 3–3.5 hours, from the city quay | ~10 hours, coach/train out and back |
| The fjord | Osterfjord, ~27 km, and the Mostraumen strait — a real fjord, a genuinely narrow strait, a waterfall | The Nærøyfjord — UNESCO-listed, narrower and higher, the postcard |
| Land? | No — a turnaround voyage | Yes — Flåm village, the Flåm Railway, Stegastein viewpoint on most itineraries |
| Price | From ~$78 (NOK 940 / 840 direct) | ~$310–$425 on the platform |
| Reviews | 4.7 · 9,797 (the original) | 4.7–4.8 · 600–1,300 per tour |
| Best for | Cruise-ship days, one-night stays, first fjord, families with a short attention span | The one big fjord day of the trip |
When Mostraumen is the right call
- You have a morning or an afternoon, not a day — a cruise-ship call, a Bergen stopover.
- You want the fjord from the middle of the city without a coach.
- Budget: under $100 versus $300-plus.
- Children: three hours is a good length; ten is not.
When the Nærøyfjord and Flåm is the right call
- It is your one fjord day in Norway and you want the UNESCO one.
- You want to land — a village, the railway, a viewpoint.
- The price is not the deciding factor.
The most-booked versions: the Viking Village, Nærøyfjord cruise & Flåm Railway day (4.8 from 1,334, ~$423) and the UNESCO fjord cruise, Flåm & Stegastein with lunch (4.7 from 1,209, ~$312).
Do both?
Plenty of people do: Mostraumen on arrival day or a cruise afternoon, the Nærøyfjord as the big excursion. They do not repeat each other — one is a strait seen from a boat, the other a landscape you cross.
The other Bergen fjord options
- Hardangerfjord — orchards and waterfalls, a full day; several tours in the rail.
- RIB safari to Mostraumen — the same strait at speed in a survival suit, about $158, 4.8 from 124.
- City sightseeing cruise — an hour round the harbour, no fjord.
The whole Bergen fjord-cruise field — city cruise, Hardanger, RIBs and the Mostraumen boats — is compared on its own page.
