1. The harbour and Bryggen (first 15 minutes)
The boat leaves Zachariasbryggen, the quay by the Fish Market, and the first minutes are Bergen from the water: the Bryggen wharf’s wooden gables (UNESCO), the harbour, the fortress at Bergenhus, then the islands and bridges as the city thins. Stand on the port (left) side going out for Bryggen.
2. Into the Osterfjord (roughly the next hour)
The boat turns north-east and the fjord begins in earnest — the Osterfjord, about 27 kilometres to the strait, walls steepening, hill farms perched on ledges, small villages that only face the water. Osterøy, one of Norway’s largest inland islands, sits to your right for much of the way. This is the stretch to be on the sun deck if the weather is kind, and inside with a coffee if it is not; the audio guide (Norwegian and English on the original) narrates it.
3. Mostraumen — the strait
At the top the fjord pinches into Mostraumen, a tidal strait a few boat-widths wide where the current runs visibly. The captain slows and threads it — this is why the boats are the size they are — and it is the reason the cruise exists. Deck, front, camera up.
4. The waterfall
Just beside the strait a waterfall drops straight into the fjord, and the captain noses the bow up to it — close enough to feel the spray on your face. It is loudest with snowmelt in May and June; in a dry August it is a ribbon. Then the boat turns.
5. Back the way you came (about 1.5 hours)
No shore stop, no village walk — the return is the same fjord in the other light, and the lounge and snack bar come into their own. The 10:00 sailing is alongside again around 13:30.
The one thing to know about the route
You do not set foot on land. This is a fjord seen, which is exactly why it fits a half day from a city quay. If landing somewhere matters — a village, a railway, a viewpoint — that is the Nærøyfjord and Flåm day, not this one.
