Best Time of Year for the Mostraumen Fjord Cruise
The Mostraumen cruise runs year-round: May–June for the waterfall at snowmelt volume, July–August for three sailings a day and long light, autumn for colour and space, winter for the fjord in low sun. Month by month, with the 2026 sailing times.
The Mostraumen cruise sails every month of the year — Bergen’s fjord is sheltered water — so “best time” is about what you want from it: the waterfall, the light, the crowd, or the price of getting to Bergen. Here is the year, month by month, with the operators’ 2026 sailing times.
Whenever you go, take the morning boat: the original’s 10:00 sailing runs all year.
Month by month
| Months | Sailings (Rødne original) | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| January – March | 10:00 daily | The fjord in low winter sun, snow on the tops, near-empty deck; hat and gloves for the strait |
| April – June | 10:00 and 14:00 daily | Snowmelt — the waterfall at its loudest, especially May–June; light lengthening; the sweet spot |
| July – August | 10:00, 12:00 and 14:00 daily | Long light, warmest deck, three sailings — and the busiest boats; book the 10:00 |
| September – October | 10:00 and 14:00 daily | Autumn colour on the fjord walls, fewer people, still two sailings |
| November – December | 10:00 daily | Quiet, dark early, atmospheric — dress for it |
The local operator’s pattern is similar (10:30 in winter, 10:30 and 14:30 in season, 9:00/13:00/17:00 in July–August); the live-guided sailing runs 11:00 and 15:00.
The best time of day
Morning. The 10:00 boat is back around 13:30 — which is why this is the fjord for cruise-ship passengers and one-night visitors — and the light on the Osterfjord walls is better outbound in the morning than in the afternoon glare of high summer. The afternoon sailings are the fallback, not the first choice.
Weather
Bergen is famously wet, and it does not matter much: the strait and the waterfall are as good in rain (arguably better — more water), the lounge is warm and dry, and cancellations are rare because the Osterfjord is sheltered. Bring rain gear for the deck at any time of year. Every listing carries free cancellation if you change your mind on the morning.
Which is the “best” month?
If we had to pick one: late May or June — the waterfall at full volume, two sailings a day, long light, and the summer crowds not yet at their peak. If we had to pick a second: September, for colour and space.
